I was a nurse for 3 years in the late '60s. Doc had been my pediatrician many years before I attended UCSF and encountered her again. Those years working with Doc and Ellen were among the best in my life! Bearskin Meadows conjures up wonderful memories. So glad I googled Doc and found this page.

Just returned from 6/27/11 visit to BMC where learned of Ellen's passing. Phoned in a report to Hawk in NJ after return. Camp is still as beautiful, secluded, and quiet as ever, just like Hume Lake. Only recognized Koli's name on this site. Started at Whitaker in 1953. I will be 70 in a few days and have enjoyed being a D since the end of WWII. Please do not email me unless you will follow it up with cash.

I went to Bearskin meadows my first time in 1962 at the age of five and several times during the sixties. Thanks to the great care at camp by Bob, Ellen Simpson and Doc Olny it was a great time.Over the years I have met some people that were at camp Whitaker back in the late thirties and forties, those were the original campers and some are still around today.

Our family, Michael, Anders, Ellen and Chris, had such wonderful times at Bearskin. Our Family Camp times could not be beat. Watching the new arrivals and getting used to the camp rigors was a delight. Many of you will recall "Buffer" ( in the drink dispensers), any campers' delight. Seeing campers who did their first blood test or who gave their first insulin shots to themselves was embolding to the entire group. I am sorry to say that Michael Lars Johnson passed away in October 2009, I think from prolonged low blood sugar. Still, he had a wonderful and full life. He was diagnosed as Type 1 before the age of 2 years. So, we feel that we were lucky to have him with us for 26 years that modern medical care allowed. Right now I am looking at a T-Shirt that says "Bearskin Takes Mt. Whitney '98" Mike and the other campers from Bearskin had scaled Mt. Whitney on this great adventure. The day he left Mt. Whitney, Mike met us and we hiked to Tehipite Valley, a very arduous hike through Kings Canyon.....and he did it in his "Vans" tennis shoes, having forgotten his hiking boots!. Michael always enjoyed Bearskin Meadow. Your friend, Chris Johnson

I have some very fond memories of BSM camp. My parents would send me for 2 weeks each summer beginning in 1963 or 1964. I was the 'youngest' camper that had been there at that time. Dr. Olney and Helen Simpson were both there. Dr. Olney treated me from age 4 years until 16 years when I moved to Arizona to go to college. When I moved back to California I ended up in the central valley region (Stanislaus County) so did not return to San Francisco. I have some great camp pictures - the big roll out ones that were produced each year. I look over these pictures from time to time and both laugh at how dirty I look in the pictures (around the camp fire dirty) but also relish the time I spent at the camp. It would be great to take a trip to the camp to visit. Is this possible?

I stumbled on this site and it stirred my memories of attending camp in the late 1950s. I attended for two years when I was about 10 or 11 or 12. The first year the camp was at an older site and the second year was at the new (and I assume current) Bearskin Meadow Camp. It seemed like the first site had a different name but I am not sure what it was, Camp Kaweah perhaps?, but maybe not.

Just happened on to this, wow! been a long time. Still think of all. Hope to hear from some of you lost ones!!

It wa supposed to be 2 week gig for me in 1976 as a camp counsler. I was a fairly new T1 diabetic age 20, but came from 3 generations of T1's and was recruited by Ellen. What was supposed to be a 2 week gig turned out to be all summer because a senior camp counsler got caught seeking something into to camp and was booted before the campers arrived. So there I was in charge of one of the sleeping porches and 2 CIT's. It was a wild summer - lots of romances, skinny dipping in off hours which were not many. It all changed my life in a profound way and I smile when I think about it. I had my guitar that summer and the camp inspired some writing of nice ballads when I was there. Also I understand they were later recorded by some UCLA graduate students in a movie about the camp. One song "Woodpecker Rock" I still play which brings back memories. Retirement for me in some fashion is around the corner and I am looking forward to volunteering at the camp in some fashion. Ah to re-live our youth!!!

I learned so much from the counselor staff about Diabetes especially from those wonderful 2 Drs. Ellen and Doc. I go camping 4-5 times a year to relax and still sing the same campfire songs. Thanks Uncle Rich. Hope Bill's goat finally got over eating those shirts. I would love to hear from all my friends especially my grandchildren. Take care Don aka Grandpa Nod

I was a camper at Bear Skin Meadows in the first 2 years of me having Type 1 (1974, 1975). The memories I have are bright and warm. The camp fire (the songs are rattling through my head to this day!), the square dancing, the creek, the smell of the sequoias, the clinitests before dinner, the laminated meal cards, the splittering splattering of rain on my plastic tarp, the intense stars in the night time sky. I wish there were, no medical need for the camp anymore, but since there is, it's a damn good thing that it's there...

June 1967. Doc Onley told my mom I had diabetes, my brother was going to Bearskin Meadows and she said send Dan too. My education started one cloudy June morning in shot line. My brother held me back until everyone had gone to chow. My first shot was 2 units of U-40 regular and I yelled and it echoed back to me. That was the last time that happened. I have no complications (knock on wood) thanks for letting me share.

I was there from 78-82. I was a skinny toe-headed blonde on the Fawn cabin. I was just at BMC today to visit a foster child(I work for CPS). They no longer have buffer---but the bell is still there. The kids can't slide down the creek-like we used to. The arts/crafts is VERY small. But huge surprise---Uncle Rich is still going. It has been 31 years for him. I just celebrated my 30th year with diabetes--now on pump. Had one child with an A1C of 5.8% when pregnant--am now 6.2%. Anyone know what happened to the Bowman sisters and one brother? They were from the San Fran area. Susie Bowman was my counselor for 4 years. You can contact me at: Qristyn@msn.com or look for me on myspace with the profile Name: Qristyn. Hope to hear from all old campers. Oh, one more thing about camp...Bruno Bear is still there but Splinter was stolen a few years ago and there is a "replacement" bear.

Having been at BSM as a camper from 1985 to 1992 and staff 1993 to 1995. BSM was amazing and life changing for me, I hope to someday return for a summer. I owe so much to those I met at bearskin, and I try to pass that on to those I meet in my career now.

I was having a nostalgic moment and look what I found! It's been years since I have been to camp and there are moments where I look to the stars and remember being on an overnight somwhere where we stayed up all night and watched the stars move (ok it was the earth but it was great!). I haven't felt such peace in a long time. Bearskin has always had a special place in my heart and I am glad to see the tradition of love is continuing.

Here in the g'old USA. It is amazing to read all of the excerpts from all of you who have been to Bearskin from days long ago and days not so long ago. Camp has brought people together from all over the world, and to read about its history, and about Doc & Ellen, is a priveledge. We are still going very strong and will be celebrating camp's 70th summer this year, and honoring Dr. Ellen at our upcoming Gala. While campers may not ride up to camp on the back of flat-bed truck like many years ago, much of camp is the same, and the magic is still going strong. Campers still sleep under the stars, do leathercraft in arts & crafts (and pine needle basketry too), swim in the pool, and revel in all camp has to offer. If ever any of you are in the area, come by camp. We'd love to see and meet you! Janet Kramschsuter, Camp Director

Memories that last a lifetime were made at Bearskin Meadows Camp. 1963-1966 I was a 4-H camper there. I developed a love for Kings Canyon Nat. Park, and made many friends. I visited the camp in 1999. The caretaker let an "old" camper walk through to Seven Steps. Joy revisited! Thanks for being there.

I attened from 1980 to 1988, and was, at the time, uncomfortable about being in the outdoors, as I was a city kid... but now, in retrospect, I'd give anything to be back there...! Funny how that works, isn't it? I miss being at the camp, and would love to be back there in some form.

I attended BSM from 1967 through about 1975. It was one of the best experiences of my life and why I am the way I am after 40 yeard of Type 1 Diabetes. I have VERY fond memories of the camp and all the activities. Archery, the rifle range, pottery, dances, camp fires, the songs I still hum and sing, and the staff. I fondly remember Doc and Ellen and the friends I made (just wish I could remember all the names.) Was Police Chief one session, Fire Chief another. It was grand. Thanks for reading this. Perry

Don't know who will remember me from my days pool directing and then running the camp for a summer, but I just wanted to say what great times I had high in the California mountain. Just wanted to touch base and reconnect.

I don't know if we ever talked in depth about my writing aspirations between "Under The Boardwalk" campfire performances and me running around like a jackass with a bullhorn jammed in my mouth, but I made good on some of my goals and dreams as well did many of you from the comments I've read. I went on to travel the world, write for newspapers and magazines and crack into the publishing world. Wrote a couple bestselling travel memoirs, "Metal Cowboy" and "Riding Outside The Lines". I'm also a regular contributor to Backpacker, Men's Journal, Parenting, Outside and Bicycling Magazine, which sounds like boasting but it's really just a lot of playful hard work.

During the Summer of 2005, I gave approaching mid-life the figurative middle finger and hauled my pint-sized posse cross country by bike. Mayhem ensued... a book about it wasn't far behind.

(See Men's Journal link below to the cover story)

http://www.mensjournal.com/adventure/0512/poll_physicalfeat.html

We went from Portland Oregon to Washington DC on 14 ft of bicycle, trailabike and trailer for a Huck Finn meets Annie Lamont style epic. It's actually a very subversive diddy about social ills, human frailty and what could be done with all of our undiscovered moments, but wrapped in my signature satire and humor.

What else? I have a beautiful family life - with two sons and a third boy on the way. I married an Amazonian strong and solid California girl, Beth, and we hunkered down in Portland, Oregon with our cat our grease car (vegetable oil fueled bio rig. When I'm not off on book tours, speaking gigs, charity rides or performing my one man show "Metal Cowboy Mayhem". Think Mark Twain meets John Legizamo, part monologue, part slide show, part Irish bard style storytelling and a flat out good time - I also teach writing in the schools up here, do assemblies, workshops writers conferences and work with a huge Diabetes charity ride and Habitat For Humanity.

At any rate, drop me an email, let me know where you are? What your life is like, if you keep in touch with any Meadows folks etc. Oh, and you and yours are always welcome if you find yourself in Portland, Oregon area.

PS. Since Bearskin, we've run a number of outdoor programs and art associations - concurrent with my writing programs. We even founded a New Mexico program called Camp Creative, which took off through the school system. My latest book, "Momentum Is Your Friend" - due out next month - is going to help fund a Camp Creative in the gorge - Arts, Activism and Expedition Summer program here in Oregon. The first 10,000 direct sale copies made by us of the 50,000 first printing from the publisher ( we twisted hard to get them to make an altruistic deal) 85 percent ($19) of each sale goes to support Camp Creative. It's so much fun to turn a bit of good fortune and some name recognition/fan base into something more lasting and far reaching. God knows the world could use more light these days. Stay well and hope to hear from you.

Cheers,
Joe Kurmaskie

In a moment of nostalgic surfing, I found this site, and read a posting by Kathleen Brown, April 2003, expressing her admiration for Dr. Mary B Olney, and adding that Dr. Olney had been her pediatrician. Well, as it happens, the object of my nostalgic surfing was Dr. Mary B. Olney! She was my doc from birth to, what, 10? ll? - I don't remember - and was pediatrician to the generation before me, as well as a sorority sister/friend of my mother's at U.C. Berkeley.

I HATED the day when puberty forced me to a new doc -- as Kathleen wrote in her post, when you knew Dr. Olney, you felt "like (you) knew an angel." She wasn't just one in a million; she was one of a kind, and, just like Kathleen, "I idolize her even today."

My mother used to speak with such respect and admiration of Dr. O's pioneering work with diabetes, especially with diabetic children, and about her founding the Camp. I was really too young to fully appreciate the significance of that; I simply adored the woman as a person, and as my pediatrician, whose love for her work and for her patients shone like the brightest star, enveloping all who knew her in a way that can never be forgotten.

One year ago, in my 50s, I had sudden onset diabetes, out of the blue, with glucose over 800, together with a bout of pancreatitis, just to add to the excitement. Naturally, I have learned (and am learning) the almost endless implications, hazards, etc. lurking behind that one word ... diabetes (my understanding of it was NOTHING compared to the reality)... and since diagnosis, it seems everywhere I turn I meet a fellow diabetic. Unfailingly I am blown away by the caring concern uniting those of us who have this disease in common. In that caring concern, every time, I feel the spirit of Dr. Olney, and if I shut my eyes I can see, clear as a bell, that wonderful smile of hers, which communicated SO much, so personally ... just for you.

I remember her unreserved and ultimately reassuring hugs - especially once when I really freaked at the sight of one of those big, old glass syringes, and actually dashed out of her office, onto the street, in my underwear. I am also humbled anew as I think of her tireless and almost revolutionary work for diabetics, and how much she achieved, ESPECIALLY considering that the obstacles women faced as physicians in the 30s and 40s, were probably ten times greater that we can even imagine. Jeez. I didn't mean to get so carried away -- but THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for allowing me my moment of nostalgia, and most of all for a chance to offer my tribute - and to honor - Mary B. Olney, surely one of the most remarkable and gifted pediatricans/physicians (M or F) of the 20th century ... and a human being of rare spirit and beautiful qualities, who with indescribable humility and utter absence of ego, made such significant contributions to the welfare and health of others, that they are as vibrantly at work today as they ever were.

God Bless you, Dr. Mary B. The mark you left is indelible --on my heart, and on diabetics everywhere. Love, Jamie

Forty years ago, I was the youngest camper at Bearskin Meadow at the age of 7. My last name at that time was Schuurman, later Sims and now Ray. Every year, I could hardly wait until the day I boarded the Greyhound Bus in Hayward that lead me to my home away from home. Even after I got married in 1989, I spent a glorious summer as the Administrative Assistant. Even to this day, I can smell the wonderful pine-scented breeze and hear the creek in the distance. I will never forget making crafts, swimming in the pool and creek, playing archery and learning how to manage my diabetes. 40 years later, I'm in remarkably good shape for someone who has been a Type I diabetic for so many years. I credit my healthy life to what I learned as a camper. I live in Asheville, NC now and own an eBay consignment store with my brother, Steven. I'm married and have 2 step-hildren and 2 furry children. Every year at this time, I still think about my glorious fun-filled summers! I can't say "Hi" to Bruno this year and ask that you give him a pat on the head for me!

I first visited Camp in 1962 and returned every year til 1971. As a camper I spent lots of time at the creek and in crafts. Probably the most important thing I accomplished as a CIT was helping build the steps leading to the craft hall. I wish I'd listened better to Doc as she taught about personal diabetes maintenence back in those 'dark ages' of diabetes care. I lost my eyesight in 1981 which truly woke me up to how negligent I had been. But sans most other problems I am alive and well and still working and active at 52. I remember one night when I was a teen on Tiki Lodge a huge thunderstorm boiled up out of the Central Valley. It was a real boomer, and the lightning was striking all around us. We had one big guy, a former Marine, who was a CIT and he was really losing it. Then as the storm began to abate we saw a big fireball slowly descend right toward us. It exploded about 10 feet above the deck, and that guy ran for his life. About 2 hours later they found him hiding in the boys' bathroom, shivering, wide-eyed, but okay. I wouldn't have missed those kind of experiences for the world! If anyone remembers me and would like to write please do so, and please bvisit my web page (www.williamschley.com). And special thanks for the part Doc, Ellen, Mike Hooper Mike Bennett, and so many other counselors and friends had in my formative years. Hey, does anyone know if the San Francisco Junior Museum still exist? Fond regards, Bill

ok .. so now its 2006 (I have an entry from 2001)... I am no longer married to a diabetic but I still have my children. Courtney is 15 now and will be 16 after she returns from camp this year. She goes EVERY year. Its a wonderful vacation for her and an chance to learn new things. Jacob is now 7 but not too sure he wants to be away from Mom so hes gonna wait another year. I still think BMC is the best thing ever for diabetes. Theres all those "groups" doing the research to cure diabetes and I think thats geat .. but its also great of BMC to teach our children how to live with the hand they were delt. In this world, that education is priceless

Greetings and best wishes to the many friends and staff who helped me through the most difficult period of my life. I attended BSM from 1962 to 1971, first as camper and later as a CIT. I caught my first trout in the creek and slept under the stars the first of many, many times there. My problems were legion, but with grace and mercy I found a better life shortly after my last session at BSM. Those of you who've contacted me throughout the years know how i value renewing old friendships, so anyone who wants to get in touch with me please do so. Without camp it would have taken many years for me to develop a set of viable social and interpersonal communication skills, and I value the times I was confronted by staff in my youth as much as the indelible memories I have of the Sierras and the beauty of nature I enjoyed at BSM. Not to mention the valuable lessons learned at Doc's side about diabetes maintenence. Anyone who knows how to contact Mike Bennett, Frank Taylor, Karen Malough, Mike Hooper, or Betsy St. Andre please send them my info. And please visit my web page at WWW.WILLIAMSCHLEY.COM to see where life has led me. Blessings and sincere thanks to those of you who made such a profound difference in my existence. W. F. I also cherish my memories made at BSM. I spent whole summers there making friends while managing my diabetes. Doc pulled my first loose tooth. Ellen had a way that either frustrated you into sneaking into the kitchen and gorging on sugar cubes and buffer or motivating you to accomplish your blood sugar goals. As a young camper she could just look over her glasses just right and you knew you were buggin her. When I was a CIT we had a special hand wave that we adopted in her honor. I always thought she was a strong, brave and beautiful person and without Ellen, Doc, and Grace we would not have the beautiful camp. I miss my camper days and hope to return soon to volunteer so other campers can have the same special times. Looking for Beth Naert, Danielle Buffington, Tom Brown, Brandon, Jon, Karen,

But I want to give an enormous shoutout to Eric Haessler, who was there for every single one of the campers every day until he left with us with tears in our eyes. He was there every summer for my first 3 or 4 years, and every day in between if we need to talk to someone. He said something I'll never forget. "It's not my fault my pancreas crapped out on me." Classic Eric, thank you so much for everything you've given every single one of us. I hope you're doing well, and still fighting the fight. Also, a huge hello to the Day Trekkers from 2003, we had tons of fun, especially to Sonja, Kyle, Craig, and Dillon. May it never end, can't wait till we're all counselors!

I am so happy to find this site. I started going to Bearskin in 1981 at age 6 and continued on for the next 9 years. My summers at Bearskin were the BEST. I can still remember the words to campfire songs, rollerskating in the cafeteria, square dancing, the creek, seven steps, Grace. I really need to go back as an adult. Bearskin had a profound effect on who I am today. Some of my best memories were created over my summers at camp. I am so thankful to all of the staff and friends that made my time so wonderful!!!

I just returned from Teen Camp last night and I already miss ya'll. It is always so weird to return to the real world. I miss the click of the disposable lancets, the constant beeping of meters, the insulinlines (really, that should be two words), the carbs already counted for you, the endless supply of apple juice, CXPBs, and sugar cubes (YUMMMM). I will miss being able to say I'm low or I'm high w/out receiving uncomfortable stares. You all make me a happier and healthier peron. I love you. Shouts out and props to the Backpackers, especially. Thanks for the laughs and the strength! Ground Zero, Baby--ahhh, and to think that I held out on the trail!!!

REUNION 2003! Check out Koli Cutlers recent message about the 2003 Camp Reunion!! I have great memories of Camp and I can't wait to see it again and share it with my family. Now...where did I put those old Bearskin Meadow yearbooks? Thank goodness I won't have to leave a sample in a little cup in the lavatory this time around. Does anyone remember the Couselors doing the H.M.S. Pinafore, how to do the Salty Dog Rag, or eating frozen cantelope on a stick? I hope I can find my way to the Campfire, or still climb the boulders outside the Dining Hall. Are they going to force me to eat all my food, even the butter when I've run out of bread? Ahhh, sweet memories! There's a big smile on my face. Come to the reunion and see all your old favorites again!!

I was thrilled to see that BSM has a website! I was a dumb high school student and not much of a counselor in the 60's but had a wonderful experience learning about diabetes and myself in so many ways.

I am now an "over 50" and a student again, taking a graduate courses in Therapeutic Recreation on the internet (They didn't even have computers when I went to college!) Dr. Mary B. Olney was my pediatrician when I was growing up and I idolize her even today. What an opportunity she created for so many to learn how to manage with their diabetes! I feel like I knew an angel.

Now I am writing a paper and decided to investigate recreational opportunities for diabetics and was thrilled to se that Bearskin Meadows is still going strong and supporting children and families with diabetes in such a positive way. Thank you Dr. ONLY!! (I thought that was her name for sooo many years!

We attended Family Camp last year with my daughter, Monica, who was diagonsed in March of 2001. She was 7 at the time.

Camp was a great experience for all of us. Our son, Greg, (age 11) got to see a little bit about how other kids coped with brothers/sisters with diabetes. It gave us all a perspective on the disease we did not have (and needed terribly!).

We leave tomorrow morning for Family Camp #2 and look forward to seeing everyone!

I loved Bearskin Meadows! It really helped me to learn the things I needed to know in order to survive. It was also the first time I had other friends who had the same condition and knew ALL of what it was like to live with diabetes.

I was scared to go at first, but a month before 4th session began, my brother Robert was diagnosed, so he came with me. We went for two summers and now I always feel sorry for adults who grew up diabetic, but never got to go to camp.

Lake Hume, Lower and Upper Potholes, camping out in the rain, folk-dancing, campfire and many other wonderful memories were a significant part of my childhood.

Doc and Ellen, Jeff and Lucy Smith (and Sheba) and all the staff were the best. There are too many people to mention here. I hope Bruno is still there!

Thank-you for creating a memory book for Bearskin Meadows!

Greetings - I certainly have fond memories about Bearskin Meadow. Sleeping outdoors on the wood decks, swimming in the creek near camp and jumping from a 10 foot high rock into a large pool. Giant ants! All those sweet girls on the other side of camp. An occaisional thunderstorm that would strike near camp then pour water on us like out of a bucket for five minutes then disappear. Looking at all the stars at night from the open deck cabins before sleeping. One of the guys in my cabin hiked about ten miles to a nearby lake resort to stock up on candy bars and goodies. Don't tell anybody I said that. Lining up for insulin shots in the early morning, what fun. Going on day trips to nearby lakes in the back of a big truck. Campfire songs. Striped giant beetles. Having an extra Graham cracker before bed at night to avoid hypoglycemia (and lying to get one). Taking the train from Hayward fo Fresno then trucking up to camp. I was there in 1965, 66, 67 and 1968. Had a counselor named Phil. Hey Phil whatever happened to you? Later, Carlos E

HI! I had a great time at bearskin Medow. It was the coolest camp I have ever gone to. I don't have diabetes, but my aunt (Dr Mary) does. I had so much fun and the counselors are really nice and supportive. Thanks, bearskin Meadow! I just wanted to say that I had an awsome time and that---I still think about my camper friends and counselors!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spent the evening talking about what an important role Bearskin Meadow had in my learning to live with Diabetes. I was a camper in 1977, 78 and 79 and a Counselor in Training in 1980. Those were formidable years and the importance of the camp for me is still remarkable.

Had some super times with the bunch at Bearskin Meadow. The campers were great, the fellow counselors very kind (not to mention, extremely cool), and the leadership world-class. Doc and Ellen did some great things to keep that place ship-shape.

Well, I just got back from a reunion three months ago at Camp Joslin outside Boston, and am wondering when the next Bearskin Meadow Reunion will be, for I fly through SFO and LAX often now that I work for State Dept/USAID.

Please email me, if you feel like saying "Hi." It would be nice to relive some of that fun!

Hello again, I find myself thinking about my time as a counselor at Bearskin Meadow and thought I should write somthing as I have not entered an entry in 2+ years. The longer it has been since I was there, the more I seem to miss it. As I sit at my computer in my office at work, I can help but think of a fond memory from camp. I was on the 3 day hike to Alta Peak with my deck. I was having a less than great day and was expressing this to the counselor who was in charge of hikes (forgive me as I have forgotten his name!) and he stopped and told me to look around. As I did this he said "This is your office, how can you be upset. You have the most beutiful place in the world to work!" Now as I sit at my desk in my current office, I can't help but miss my other office. Hope everyone I knew is great. If you remember me, please drop me a line, I would love to hear from you. -Bill :)

I went to BSM from 1966 to 1970. Many good memories, recently, while camping down in Sequoyah Nat'l Park with my 13 year old son, I tried finding the camp. I believe I got as far as the caretaker's house but everything looked so different. Many good memories of the camp, crafts, capture the flag, folk dancing, cleaning the bathrooms (okay, not all great memories,)and my first kiss ever.

I am 51 and have had type 1 diabetes since I was 5. I attended Bearskin Meadows when I was a teenager. That was in the 1960s. I remember the crafts at camp the most. I enjoyed making pottery, working on leather projects and making jewlery. I still have a clay bear that I made in pottery. In those years there was a rifle range where you could learn to shoot 22 rifles. A good friend of mine and I spent one summer doing nothing but shooting.

I remember some of the counselors. We had one who was a young man with an old car that had a horn that sounded like a dieing cow. We used to tease him that he would sound his horn going around a corner one day and a truck driver coming the other way would ram him to put him out of his misery.

We especially enjoyed sleeping out on the wood decks. The only drawback was at night when someone went into a severe hypoglycemic event. Then they would call Doc. Oney down to help bring the person out of the event.

It was great meeting so many other diabetics. When you are at home with your family you often feel that you are the only diabetic in the world and your problems are the worse. I found out differently from the people I met at camp. We all shared common problems. I can remember overhearing groups set out for an after meal walk because their blood surgars were too high.

Camp fires were a lot of fun. My children and grandchildren all wonder where I got all of the silly songs. I still sing the songs I learned there. They bring back fond memories of days gone by.

Bearskin Campers of today are very lucky...back when I was a wee Fawn camper in 1987, we had to pee into little cups every morning. Also, the farther back you go, the nastier the snacks were....children of today would be amazed at the sort of thing people used to feed small diabetic children! Also, Carnival was a lot rougher than it is today (or than it was in 1995, when I made my final appearance as a CIT). I hope all campers of today have the "special" memories I do! First time I saw an insulin pump was in 1979 at camp and now I am on one! Of course, mine is like 1/1000 of the size of the original one I saw. I learned a lot about diabetes and about being a good person from Doc and Ellen and will always remember them.

I remember LOTS of new experiences for myself at BSM...the green bacon I hid in my napkin so I wouldn't have to eat it...then we HAD to clean our plates! Frost on our sleeping bags, campfire, forgetting to take off my watch before swimming in the pool! The pet skunk! Hello! My name is Julia and i have been attending Bearskin Meadow since 92. I enjoyed your website,I love everything and anything involving camp. Do you know of any other sites or places that have more stuff on camp,or maybe people i can contact? One last question,do you know the procedure of signing up to be a CIT? Thanks for your time and I hope to hear from you soon! -Julia Johnson

Response:

Julia's email message prompted me to create this Memory Book so I decided to included it here. I referred her to the BYF office for info on becoming a CIT. Anyone want to suggest another link for camp info? --Bob

Hello to all BSM family members! I enjoyed my years at BSM immensely. I hope others will share their memories and find old friends here.

I was staff at BSM from '93-96. I worked mostly as a deck counselor. I also built the low ropes course behind Cedar Hall during the summers of '94 and '95.

I also worked at old Camp IDEAL from '89-'92 both at the Santa Cruz and Sonora Pass locations. I'd love to hear from camp IDEAL people. If you're online, send me some email.

1964, I was eight years old, and like a lot of us, I was sure I was the only one. The trip on the bus from Oakland was terrifying. I had no idea where I was going or why. I woke up the next morning on a deck called Redwood, walked toward the infirmary and saw what at the time I considered a miracle. Lines of other kids getting shots. I fell in love with Bearskin Meadow and it is still just as strong. I went every year until the summer of 1975. Became a CIT and Counselor. The lessons of that process allowed me to succeed in life. I became a Park Ranger and Firefighter, got fitted with a pump and made it through a very tough Police academy and became a Deputy at 50 years old. I owe it all to Bearskin. I am close to retirement and would love to give back as a volunteer.

Hello I had gone to camp in the 80's with wayne & was just wondering how you are and were your at now? Phlebguylyle@gmail.com

I was at camp from 1971-about 1980 or so. Doc was my endocrinologist, and she is who I attribute lasting this long to. I was friends with Wes, Gina, Tom Barnes, Sean Heckman, and lots of other folks!

A positive memory for me.
